Steven Sean Garland was born and raised in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.

He moved west with his family in 1979, where he earned a degree in English at University of California, Davis, all the while threatening to declare a Theatre major as he haunted the department's stages in productions ranging from Master Harold...and the boys to American Buffalo to Jacques and His Master.
